This paper examines the role of vocal expression and masculinity within the Belgian Parliament in the nineteenth century, highlighting how political speech served as a means for articulating modern citizenship and middle-class masculine identity. It explores the historical significance of masculine sounds, vocal authority, and the ways in which the male voice was scrutinized as a reflection of political performance and identity.
