On Stuttering Activism and Resistance

Open Access

In this chapter, the author distinguishes between ‘activism’ and ‘resistance’ as two separate types of responses to disability oppression. Stuttering social activism and resistance have been defined by their practitioners, on the fly, to explain efforts taken to deal with either the neglect or repression of disabled experience. Activism is a coordinated and collective strategy of institutional challenge. Resistance represents opposition to institutional involvement and can be accomplished individually.
